Soupcase - Synopsis

On holiday in Marmaris, Turkey with her niece Adesola, Esther soon realises that the stranger she has been “gisting” (gossiping) with at breakfast is her business competitor.

To make matters worse, she receives news that her dad the “Oba” (King) has just died and she must now take up the traditional role of “Regent”, temporarily sitting on the throne, so it is not left vacant until another monarch is installed.  Esther must decide where her loyalties lie: the business and life she has built in the UK or a family distant from her in Nigeria.

Soupcase - The Inspiration

Soupcase was created as part of the Rapid Writers Response programme by Theatre503, where emerging writers create, develop, and stage new work within a 3-week period, directly responding to themes from the venue's current main-stage production.

At the time, Adenike, a first generation British Nigerian was frustrated by continuously being mistitled in emails, both at work and other professional settings, Soupcase was born as the rapid response piece to Out of Sorts by Danusia Samal. Out of Sorts tells the story of a first generation Muslim girl trying to balance life as a free-spirited British millennial, versus the traditional family values.

Soupcase thus explores the concept of home, for immigrants who have lived abroad longer than the country of their birth, and the knock on effect this has for their first generation children. When culture and tradition demands action, the play questions which ‘home’ pulls the most weight?

Soupcase - The Journey

Following a conversation with the literary manager of Theatre503 about opportunities to present her work, it was recommended that she take part in the theatre's Rapid Write Response, an initiative for early career creatives. Thus, ‘Soupcase’ was born.

The short script was accepted for performance and went on to be performed on 27 & 28 October 2019, at Theatre503, produced by Anastasia Osei-Koffur and directed by Anne-Christelle Zanzen.

The feedback from this performance provided further inspiration for the completion of this piece and the full length script was ready for reading in 2020. Under the facilitation of Anne-Christelle, a table read was completed via zoom on 26 June 2020.
