I just want to get to work - Synopsis

"I can't let the fear of change grind me to a halt.  My mum has given up. I have to try for both of us." ~ Sophie

With the cost of living soaring and patience being paper thin, tensions between employers and employees are at a biting point. Sophie struggles to maintain balance when her existence implodes on her train journey into work.

I just want to get to work - The Inspiration

During a very routine journey from work, Adenike witnessed  a well dressed man suddenly collapse and hit his head hard on the train floor. Panic ensued as his head began to bleed.

There were a variety of responses: some people started recording and taking pictures on their phones. Others were screaming for medical assistance, whilst a handful grumbled about being delayed to their destination.

This caused Adenike to question the impact on the mental well-being  of individuals working in high pressure environments and the shift in social consciousness and behaviour.

‘I Just Want To Get to Work’ explores possible causes for such an incident, giving employers food for thought about the lasting impact the workplace has on a person. It also explores the consideration, or lack thereof within society and how we relate to each other in a shared space.

A short version (scratch) of the play was performed at Queen’s Theatre on 1st October 2019, directed and cast by Adenike Ojo, featuring voice overs by Lloyd Warbey.

After the scratch, Adenike completed a writing for audio drama course, facilitated by James Fritz at Spread the Word. During this course, she was convinced that audio would be a more suitable medium for the project, enabling her to explore the possibilities provided by radio, to elevate the story.

Under the mentorship of award winning playwright James Fritz, a full length piece was created and in March 2022, a one minute extract was performed by Devona Wilde as part of ‘Slam minutes’ at Pleasance Theatre.
